If you are new to Ifá, the first thing to understand is Dàfá (traditional Ifá divination) — the sacred practice at the heart of every consultation Dr. Oba Ifágbèmì conducts. Dàfá is how Ifá speaks: through a structured divination performed by an initiated Babaláwo, the wisdom of the Odù is revealed and interpreted for the person who has come with a question.
The casting of Ifá
In Dàfá, the Babaláwo casts the sacred instruments of Ifá — traditionally the ọ̀pẹ̀lẹ̀ (divining chain) or ikin (palm nuts) — in a prescribed manner. The pattern that falls is not random. It reveals the Odù: one of 256 sacred signs, each carrying its own body of verses, stories, counsel, and prescribed remedies gathered over centuries. The Odù that appears is understood to be the sign governing your question — the lens through which Ifá addresses your situation.
The Odù as sacred sign
Each Odù contains multitudes: proverbs, narratives of Orisa and ancestors, warnings, blessings, and guidance on timing and conduct. The Babaláwo's work — the product of years of training under elders — is to interpret which threads of the Odù speak to your life right now, and to render that counsel in language you can understand and use. This is why lineage and years of practice matter: the signs are fixed, but reading them well is a lifetime's study. Dr. Oba brings 25+ years of Ifá practice to every session and is the Oludasile (founder) of Ilé Àálá Temple in West Palm Beach, Florida.
What a session addresses
People bring Dàfá every kind of human question: relationships at a crossroads, career and business decisions, recurring patterns they cannot name, family matters, health concerns, spiritual development, questions of timing — should I act now or wait? The Odù speaks to the situation as it is, not as you wish it were. Sometimes its counsel confirms your instincts. Sometimes it redirects you entirely. A trustworthy reading tells you what Ifá actually says, including when the answer is difficult.
Counsel, not theater
Dàfá is not entertainment. It is a structured consultation: your situation, the casting, the interpretation done with you — with room for your questions — and a clear discussion of what Ifá counsels, including any prescribed ẹbọ (remedies or offerings). What you receive is clarity you can act on the same day, and a recording to revisit as events unfold.
Reading about Dàfá is only the beginning; the tradition is meant to be experienced.
